Image Credit: OliOil Finland -based OliOil has partnered with engineering company Elomatic to develop an autonomous oil spill response container aimed at rapidly containing spills at sea and in ports. The system uses AI and robotics to deploy containment booms automatically after an oil spill, helping stop the spread of oil before recovery operations begin, the firm said in a LinkedIn post on Monday . The technology was developed from a LUT University research project focused on Baltic Sea protection. OliOil said the container can be installed on oil-carrying vessels and at ports to improve response times. Elomatic’s work includes container design, electrification, ventilation, boat hoisting systems and propulsion design for the autonomous boats. The partnership is intended to help move the technology from the pilot stage toward industrial manufacturing. "Utilizing our broad expertise in OliOil's product development and commercialization is meaningful to us," Karoliina Joensuu , Head of Industry Business Unit at Elomatic, said.
