The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs have welcomed the announcement by TenneT and Stedin that additional electricity grid capacity in Europoort can be accelerated through the installation of a temporary transformer with a capacity of 500 MW. The expansion is expected to allow many companies in the port area to bring forward their expansion and sustainability investment plans, which have been held back by persistent grid congestion. Commissioning of the temporary transformer is expected at the earliest by the end of 2028, subject to permits being granted and the required cable connections being installed. A permanent structural solution remains anticipated in the years after 2032, when the planned permanent grid expansions are scheduled to be completed. Both the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs emphasised that the temporary transformer, while significant, does not remove the urgency of pursuing complementary interim measures. These include smarter utilisation of existing grid capacity, greater flexibility in electricity consumption patterns among port users and additional electricity generation within the port area itself. Companies awaiting grid connections will need clarity as soon as possible on whether the new transformer provides a solution for their specific requirements, in order to make investment decisions and proceed with their transition plans. The announcement is particularly relevant in the context of growing electricity demand from the port’s industrial cluster as companies electrify operations, replace fossil fuel processes and develop new energy transition activities, all of which require reliable and scalable grid access that the current infrastructure has been unable to provide at the required scale.
