Baltic Hub has received two new electric rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes, increasing the equipment available at its rail yard as the Polish container terminal continues to strengthen its intermodal operations. Once the cranes enter service, Baltic Hub expects its rail handling capacity to reach 1.2 million TEU per year. The terminal currently handles almost 800 trains each month, connecting Gdańsk with destinations across Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. The facility has seven tracks, each 750 metres long, with a combined length of 5.25 kilometres. Both cranes are equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR), allowing container numbers to be identified automatically during handling operations. They also feature anti-collision technology and 11 cameras to assist operators, along with systems for precise spreader positioning and emergency braking. Baltic Hub said much of the steel structure was manufactured in Poland, while the cranes were assembled at the terminal. “The RMG cranes will play a key role in increasing the handling capacity of the rail siding to 1.2 million TEUs per year,” said Jan van Mossevelde, CEO of Baltic Hub. “Each of these investments strengthens Baltic Hub’s position as a key logistics hub in Central and Eastern Europe.” Rail links support Central and Eastern Europe Baltic Hub has continued to develop its rail infrastructure as part of its wider intermodal strategy. Its rail services support container movements not only within Poland but also to markets including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine.
