Karachi Port has welcomed the MSC Erica, one of the world’s largest container vessels, marking another milestone for Pakistan’s container gateway. The 398.5-metre vessel berthed at the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPTL) on 12 July. The call demonstrates the port’s ability to accommodate ultra-large container ships. MSC Erica has a carrying capacity of 20,000 TEUs, a beam of 59 metres, a gross tonnage of 194,308 GT and a draught of 12 metres. After completing cargo operations in Karachi, the vessel will continue its voyage to Dalian, China. Karachi Port Trust expects the vessel’s call to handle more than 3,000 containers, highlighting the terminal’s operational capacity for handling large-scale container exchanges. According to Karachi Port Trust, the master of MSC Erica praised the port’s pilots for their professionalism, safe ship handling and hospitality during the vessel’s arrival. The call underscores Karachi Port’s efforts to strengthen its position as a regional container hub by accommodating the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels.
