Image Credit: LR Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) have secured approval in principle (AiP) for an 1 14,000 DWT product and crude oil tanker design suitable for conversion to LNG, methanol or ammonia propulsion. The concept was unveiled at SMM 2026 and is aimed at giving shipowners greater flexibility as alternative fuel technologies, infrastructure and regulations continue to develop, LR said in an emailed statement on Thursday . The tanker has been designed with future fuel conversion in mind, allowing owners to defer the choice of fuel while reducing the complexity of potential retrofits later in the vessel’s life. LR said the design addresses uncertainty over the availability, infrastructure and economics of different alternative fuels. LNG is already an established fuel pathway, while methanol and ammonia are still developing. The concept was reviewed against LR’s July 2026 class rules, including requirements for ships using gases and other low-flashpoint fuels, as well as relevant IACS Common Structural Rules for oil tankers. Final classification and statutory approval remain subject to full compliance with applicable requirements.
