Japanese owner NS United Kaiun Kaisha and Brazilian mining giant Vale International have agreed to install rotor sails manufactured by Anemoi Marine Technologies on a 400,000 dwt valemax. The sails were installed on the NSU Tubarao, which has been engaged in a long-term transportation contract between NS United and Vale since its delivery in September 2020. The installation of the rotor sails on the ship is scheduled for around September 2025. A rotor sail uses the pressure difference generated around a cylinder by rotating a cylindrical sail installed on the deck to get propulsion. It is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from the vessel by approximately 6 to 12%. The five sail units which will be used on this vessel will be 35m high and 5m in diameter. Vale has previously installed rotor sails on valemax vessels such as the Berge Bulk-owned, 388,000-dwt Berge Neblina. It is also set to put the same sails on the 2012-built 400,000 dwt valemax Sohar Max, owned by Oman’s Asyad. The company also has a target of a 15% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2035, related to the value chain, of which shipping emissions are part since the company does not own the ships. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1_95_0_1_2'); }); TagsBrazil Japan
