Image Credit: Corvus Energy Canadian ferry operator BC Ferries has awarded Corvus Energy a contract to supply battery energy storage systems for four new hybrid-electric ferries. The four vessels will each have 10 MWh of installed battery capacity, giving the project a combined 40 MWh , maritime technology firm Corvus said in an emailed statement on Tuesday . Corvus will also provide battery interface and control systems that can support a further 60 MWh on each vessel as shore charging infrastructure becomes available. The batteries will allow the ferries to operate on electric power for up to two hours. The vessels will initially use diesel-battery hybrid propulsion and will also be able to run on biofuel or renewable diesel. Each ferry will carry up to 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers and crew. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery by 2029 from China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Weihai Shipyard , with all four entering service by 2031 .
