The Panama Canal Board of Directors has appointed Miguel Antonio Lorenzo Fábrega as Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal. Lorenzo will serve alongside Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta as part of the waterway’s senior leadership team. Nearly three decades at the Panama Canal Lorenzo brings 28 years of experience at the Panama Canal and has held several engineering and management positions. He began his career as a structural engineer before becoming Executive Manager of Engineering. He later served as Deputy Manager for the Design of the Third Set of Locks and as Vice President for Engineering and Services. Since 2020, Lorenzo has served as Vice President for Infrastructure and Engineering . He also played a key role in the design, evaluation and execution of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. Infrastructure and engineering experience In his current position, Lorenzo oversees the planning, maintenance, modernisation and strategic management of the canal’s infrastructure and assets. His responsibilities include supporting the reliability of canal operations and preparing infrastructure for future maritime trade requirements. “The board of directors conducted a rigorous and technical evaluation of multiple candidates for the position of deputy administrator,” said José Ramón Icaza, Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Panama Canal Board of Directors. Transition in canal leadership Lorenzo holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad Santa María La Antigua and a master’s degree in Structural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He has also completed executive education at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Rubén Pérez Pinzón will remain acting deputy administrator until Lorenzo assumes his new position.
