Image Credit: RCL Thailand -based Regional Container Lines (RCL) has named three new container ships designed to be suitable for conversion to run on alternative marine fuels in the future. The three 4,488-TEU container ships, Anitta Bhum, Benyapar Bhum and Chantisa Bhum , are the first three vessels from an eight -ship order placed with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding , it said in an announcement last week. The vessels were named at the shipyard’s Longxue plant in Guangzhou, China . The ships feature energy-saving devices, alternative maritime power (AMP) capabilities and systems designed to reduce SOx and NOx emissions. They are also LNG-, methanol- and ammonia-ready, giving RCL flexibility to adopt alternative marine fuels. Anitta Bhum will operate on RCL’s Far East–Latin America Service , while Benyapar Bhum is planned for the Far East-Madras Service 2 and Chantisa Bhum for the South China-Indonesia Service . The remaining five vessels will join RCL’s fleet as part of its longer-term fleet renewal strategy.
