Inmarsat Maritime: From trusted connectivity to the next era of secure digital shipping in International Shipping News , Interviews 19/06/2026 For decades, Inmarsat Maritime has been closely associated with reliable connectivity at sea, earning strong recognition among Greek shipowners and the wider international shipping community. Its long-standing presence in the market has been built around three core pillars: keeping vessels connected, supporting crew communications, and providing safety services that help protect people and operations at sea. As the maritime industry moves deeper into digitalization, the role of connectivity is evolving. It is no longer only about enabling communication between ship and shore. Today, connectivity supports vessel operations, remote monitoring, business continuity, cybersecurity, and crew welfare — all of which are becoming increasingly important for shipowners and operators. During Posidonia 2026, Gert-Jan Panken, General Manager & VP Inmarsat Maritime, underlined this transition, highlighting how the company’s latest offering, NexusWave, reflects the changing needs of the market. NexusWave is presented as Inmarsat Maritime’s new flagship service, already ordered for more than 3,000 vessels. Its appeal lies in the combination of unlimited data, bonded connectivity across different carriers, and a highly secure network architecture designed to support both operational and crew communication needs. By bonding different types of connectivity, NexusWave creates what Panken described as a much larger “pipe” for customers, enabling more resilient and reliable communications. Security is also central to the service. Each packet transmitted over the network is encrypted and spread across multiple routes, while industry-grade security mechanisms are applied once the data reaches Inmarsat’s land infrastructure. For Inmarsat Maritime, cybersecurity is not treated as an additional layer, but as something embedded from the design stage.
