Cavotec and EVIAS have signed an exclusive global distribution agreement for automatic charging technology aimed at electric vehicles operating inside ports. Under the agreement, Cavotec will distribute and install EVIAS technology for the port sector worldwide. The system can charge electric terminal vehicles while they are moving or waiting for containers , reducing the need to take equipment out of operation for charging. Charging while vehicles operate EVIAS has developed a conductive charging system for intensive fleet operations. A robotic arm mounted on the vehicle automatically connects to a charging rail embedded in the road. This allows vehicles to receive power while driving or while waiting during container-handling operations. Only the section of charging rail beneath a connected vehicle is electrified. The technology can be used with terminal tractors, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and other container-handling equipment . Cavotec expands port electrification offering The partnership expands Cavotec’s electrification business into horizontal transport inside container terminals. Cavotec already provides electrification technologies for vessels and cranes, as well as automated systems for port operations. The companies said dynamic charging could reduce vehicle downtime. It could also reduce the space required for parked equipment undergoing charging. The technology will be marketed under the “Cavotec powered by EVIAS” brand. “This partnership enables us to expand our offering into horizontal transport,” said David Pagels, CEO of Cavotec. Demand for electric port equipment grows Cavotec pointed to estimates from the Zero Emission Port Alliance that between 33,000 and 47,000 new battery-electric container-handling vehicles could be ordered between 2025 and 2035.
