Port of Tauranga has secured approval for its Stella Passage development under New Zealand’s Fast-track Approvals Act 2024. The decision marks an important step for the port’s long-planned expansion. It follows the draft approval announced in August. The final approval is subject to conditions and remains subject to appeal rights. Container berth to be extended by 385 metres The project includes a 385-metre extension of the Sulphur Point container berth . The extension will be completed in two stages. Port of Tauranga will also extend the Mount Maunganui wharves by 315 metres . The project will use existing cargo storage land within the port’s current footprint. Associated works include land reclamation behind the new wharves and dredging of Stella Passage. Port targets future freight growth Port of Tauranga said the development is needed to support future freight growth in New Zealand. The port has previously warned that capacity constraints are affecting its operations. “The Stella Passage development is vital strategic infrastructure to support future freight growth for New Zealand,” said Simon Kebbell, Chief Financial Officer of Port of Tauranga. He said the project would improve supply chain resilience and efficiency while reducing costs for importers and exporters. “The development is urgently needed so it is a great relief to reach this important milestone,” Kebbell added. Final decision follows August draft approval The latest decision advances the project beyond the draft approval reported in August . Port of Tauranga receives approval for Stella Passage development At that stage, the fast-track expert panel had proposed granting the approvals, subject to conditions. Port of Tauranga and other parties were then given an opportunity to respond. The port is now reviewing the final decision and its conditions.
