Image Credit: PIL Singapore -based Pacific International Lines (PIL) has named two LNG dual-fuel container ships at a ceremony at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding yard in Shanghai , China. The 13,000 TEU ships, Kota Elok and Kota Elan , are the first in a series of 13 ships being built as part of PIL's fleet renewal programme, the firm said in a statement on its website on Tuesday . They will be deployed on the carrier's Asia-South America service. The ships will be capable of running on LNG and conventional marine fuels and feature fuel-saving technologies including optimised hull designs and energy-efficient systems. LNG is seen as a more readily available alternative marine fuel option compared to methanol or ammonia. However, these LNG-fuelled ships may still need to transition to lower-carbon fuels such as bio-LNG as emissions rules tighten. Bio-LNG can be used as a drop-in fuel in LNG-fuelled ships.
