Everllence has introduced Engine Supported Air Lubrication (ESAL) , a new technology designed to improve vessel propulsion efficiency by up to 6%. The system integrates hull air lubrication with the vessel’s main engine. According to Everllence, this can reduce fuel consumption, emissions and related compliance costs. The company has also released a white paper outlining the technology and its potential role in shipping’s energy transition. ESAL combines air lubrication with main engine Air lubrication reduces resistance between a vessel’s hull and the water by introducing air beneath the hull. Everllence’s ESAL technology integrates this process with air supplied by the main engine. The company said this approach can deliver net vessel efficiency gains of up to 6%. Everllence has already conducted multiple onboard trials across several vessels. “We are confident in both the technology and the efficiency improvements delivered by ESAL, having successfully conducted multiple onboard trials across several vessels,” said Per Cato, Senior Vice President and Head of Engineering Two-Stroke at Everllence. Everllence targets lower fuel consumption Everllence believes improving vessel efficiency can provide immediate benefits while the shipping industry’s transition to alternative fuels continues. Lower fuel consumption can reduce absolute emissions and limit exposure to changing fuel prices and regulatory costs. “The maritime energy transition must begin with reducing energy demand,” said Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at Everllence. He added that efficiency improvements can remain valuable regardless of how future fuel and regulatory frameworks develop.
