Kongsberg Maritime and a group of Norwegian maritime companies and research institutions have launched WINTEGRATE , a project aimed at accelerating the use of wind propulsion in commercial shipping. The project has secured up to NOK 68 million through Norway’s Green Platform programme. WINTEGRATE will focus on integrating Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) with other onboard technologies. These include propulsion, power management, weather routing and vessel control systems. Odfjell and Seatrans vessels to support testing The project will examine technologies including rotor sails and suction wings . WINTEGRATE aims to improve their integration with vessel systems to increase fuel savings and reduce emissions. Odfjell and Seatrans will provide demonstration vessels for the project. Operational data from these ships will help validate the technologies and support their potential commercial deployment. “WINTEGRATE represents an important step toward making wind propulsion a practical and scalable solution for commercial shipping,” said Erik Hjortland, Vice President Technology at Odfjell. He added that better integration between wind propulsion and onboard systems could increase the technology’s emissions-reduction potential. Project brings together maritime technology companies Kongsberg Maritime is the project owner, while the consortium includes several shipping, technology and research organisations. Partners include SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Digital, Odfjell, Seatrans, DNV, StormGeo, OsloMet, Norsepower, bound4blue, Corvus, OMS and DIGICAT. The project will combine wind propulsion with digital technologies, energy management and weather routing. The partners aim to address one of the challenges facing wind-assisted propulsion: integrating the technology effectively with other vessel systems.
