Image Credit: UKMTO A container ship has come under attack in the Gulf of Aden on Monday morning. The incident took place about 14 nautical miles south of Yemen at 7:35 AM UTC on Monday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said in a social media post. "A container vessel has reported being approached by a small skiff," the agency said. "The crew of the small skiff opened fire on the vessel and attempted to board. "Authorities are investigating." The incident highlights continued elevated maritime security risk in the region despite the putative ceasefire deal announced between the US and Iran on Sunday night. While Yemen's Houthi movement - behind the vast majority of attacks on commercial shipping around Yemen since late 2022 - is backed by Iran, there is no guarantee that an end to the US-Iran war will mean the Houthis also halt their attacks. The possibility also exists that Monday's attack was motivated by piracy and unrelated to the Houthis and the regional geopolitical situation. Attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have prompted most of the largest shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea and Suez Canal in recent years, adding significantly to global bunker demand because of the need for longer voyages around Africa .
