Image Credit: GCMD Mining firm BHP and Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD)  have launched a pilot project using a B100 biofuel derived from used cooking oil (UCO) and waste animal fats aboard a bulk carrier. The trial is designed to assess how biofuels from multiple feedstocks can be blended, handled and supplied through existing bunkering infrastructure, the two firms said in a joint emailed statement on Wednesday .  It will also evaluate fuel quality, traceability and vessel performance. The B100 comprised 50% tallow-derived biodiesel supplied by HAMR Energy and 50% used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) supplied by Mitsui & Co Energy Trading Singapore . The fuel was blended by Mitsui and bunkered in Singapore in early May , with Dan-Bunkering coordinating the bunkering operation. The fuel is being used by the Berge Lyngor , a vessel owned and operated by Berge Bulk and chartered by BHP to transport iron ore from Western Australia to China . According to the project partners, the biofuel has the potential to reduce well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by around 79% per voyage compared with VLSFO. The pilot will also examine potential operational impacts, including corrosion, fuel system clogging and filter blockage, while using chemical fingerprinting to verify the origin and integrity of the biofuel blend.
