Image Credit: Zen Eitzen Group subsidiary Zen has secured a new grant of NOK 200 million ($21.5 million) from Norwegian state agency Enova for two additional battery-electric container vessels. The latest award follows a NOK 200 million grant received last year for the company's first two battery-electric container ships, for which construction contracts were signed last week. With funding now secured for four sister vessels, Zen said the project marks a significant step forward in the electrification of coastal shipping. The company estimates the four vessels will cut more than 30,000 mt/year of CO2 emissions by replacing conventional tonnage on Norwegian trade routes. The 900 TEU capacity vessels will have an installed battery capacity of 100 MWh and an operating range of 550 nautical miles . The grant was formally awarded to Eitzen Avanti , the Eitzen Group unit behind the project. While the use of electric propulsion has become increasingly common in smaller vessels operating on shorter routes, limited battery range has so far prevented its wider adoption in larger ships.
