SC Ports and Norfolk Southern have expanded intermodal connectivity with a new daily direct rail service between Charleston and Huntsville, Alabama . The service is effective immediately and connects the Port of Charleston with markets across North Alabama and Middle Tennessee . Daily rail connection to Huntsville The new service gives importers and exporters another option for moving containerised cargo between Charleston and inland markets. SC Ports said the connection will provide greater flexibility and faster access to key markets across the US Southeast. “The intermodal service between Charleston and Huntsville is a meaningful addition for our customers,” said Micah Mallace, President and CEO of SC Ports. He said reliable port operations and stronger intermodal links are important for improving efficiency and consistency for shippers. SC Ports moves 25% of cargo by rail Around 25% of SC Ports’ cargo volume moves by rail . The port already offers daily express intermodal services and direct connections to Inland Ports Greer and Dillon. Its rail network also provides access to major inland hubs including Memphis, Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, Charlotte and Louisville. Norfolk Southern said the Huntsville service provides another cost-effective option for moving cargo across the Southeast. Inland rail network continues to expand The new connection follows investments in SC Ports’ inland rail infrastructure. In 2025, the port completed a US$55 million expansion of Inland Port Greer , increasing its cargo capacity by 50%. The project also added 9,000 feet of rail infrastructure to accommodate longer trains. Norfolk Southern provides daily and overnight service to Inland Port Greer, located along the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte.
