Image Credit: Mitsubishi Japanese firm Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has secured an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME) for its ammonia fuel handling system, which will be used to support testing of ammonia-fuelled marine engines. The MAmmoSS system will be installed at HZME's facility and used in shop tests for ammonia engines developed under licences from Everllence and WinGD , the firm said in a statement on its website on Friday . Ammonia is widely seen as a promising marine fuel to help decarbonise shipping. While commercial adoption is still in its early stages, the industry is gradually moving towards ammonia. The first oceangoing vessel capable of operating on ammonia has already entered service and marine engines capable of running on ammonia have been developed. "However, as ammonia is a toxic fluid, safe handling technology onboard ships is essential and is expected to drive demand for MAmmoSS," Mitsubishi said.
