Image Credit: K Line Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE) has added a new LNG carrier to its fleet as it continues to expand its LNG shipping business through long-term contracts. The 174,000 m3 vessel, built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea , was named Toho Emerald at a ceremony on September 9 , K Line said in a statement on its website on Thursday . It is owned by T.K. LNG Shipping, a joint venture between K LINE and Toho LNG Shipping , a wholly owned subsidiary of Toho Gas. The carrier will transport LNG for Toho Gas and support the company’s energy supply operations. The vessel is fitted with an LNG dual-fuel engine. LNG is seen as a more mature alternative marine fuel and is more widely available compared to other fuels such as methanol. While it emits less CO2 than conventional fuels, methane slip - involving a potent greenhouse gas - undermines part of the fuel's green credentials. Some shipowners are looking towards cleaner bio-LNG as an alternative, as it can be used in existing LNG-fuelled ships and delivers higher net GHG savings. The new carrier is expected to support Toho Gas’ LNG supply needs while strengthening K LINE’s position in the LNG shipping market.
