Port Otago in New Zealand has ordered 10 hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers as part of the modernization of its container handling operations. The order also includes Konecranes’ complete Noell Fleet Management System. Konecranes booked the order in June 2026. The equipment is scheduled for delivery by the end of August 2027 . New equipment to support container operations The hybrid straddle carriers will handle import and export containers at Port Otago. Each machine will have a lifting capacity of 60 tonnes and will be able to stack containers four-high. The equipment will also feature twin-lift spreaders. These can handle either two 20-foot containers or one 40-foot container. Konecranes will deliver the straddle carriers fully assembled. Port Otago targets lower fuel consumption The hybrid technology is expected to reduce fuel consumption compared with Port Otago’s existing diesel-powered fleet. The Fleet Management System will provide operational and telemetry data across the new fleet. Port Otago plans to use the system to analyse performance, improve equipment utilisation and support operational decisions. “As we continue modernizing our container handling operations and preparing for future growth, we needed a solution that combined high-performance equipment, advanced fleet management capabilities and strong local service support,” said Kevin Kearney, Strategic Projects Manager at Port Otago. Konecranes to provide local support Konecranes will support the equipment through its service organisation in Australia and New Zealand. “We are pleased to support Port Otago in the renewal of its container handling fleet,” said Peter Kania, Sales Director at Konecranes. He added that the combination of hybrid equipment and digital fleet management tools is designed to improve productivity and long-term operational reliability.
