The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €25 million senior loan to Constanța South Container Terminal (CSCT), a DP World subsidiary, to support the electrification of operations at Romania’s Port of Constanța. The financing forms part of a €100 million investment programme aimed at accelerating the port’s green transition. The EBRD loan will be complemented by a €19.8 million grant from the European Union under the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), while DP World will contribute the remaining €55.2 million. The project will fund new electrical infrastructure, including power networks, transformer stations, grid connections and cold ironing facilities that will allow vessels to connect to shore power while alongside. It also includes the purchase of electric cranes and electric terminal tractors. The investment is expected to reduce emissions from terminal operations while improving operational efficiency at Romania’s largest seaport. CSCT operates the South Container Terminal under a concession agreement running until 2049. The terminal is part of DP World’s global portfolio of ports and logistics assets. The project also marks the launch of Constanța’s participation in the EBRD Green Cities programme, under which the city will develop a Green City Action Plan. The initiative supports local environmental goals while incorporating digitalisation, inclusion and gender considerations. The EBRD classified the investment as a 100% Green Economy Transition (GET) project and confirmed it is aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The project is expected to support the decarbonisation of transport and logistics infrastructure while strengthening the long-term sustainability of one of the Black Sea’s most important transport hubs.
