Maersk has announced changes to its heavy weight and heavy load surcharges covering Canada and the Far East Asia-Mexico trade. For Canada, the carrier has raised its general Heavy Weight Surcharge (HWI/HWE) from US$390 to US$600. The new rate applies to both import and export movements involving Canada. Separately, Maersk has revised its Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS) from Far East Asia to Mexico. A charge of US$250 will apply to containers that exceed specified weight limits. Canada heavy weight surcharge rises to US$600 Maersk has increased its Heavy Weight Surcharge for imports from worldwide origins to Canada. The charge has risen from US$390 to US$600. It applies to all container types and movements via all locations. The same increase applies to exports from Canada to destinations worldwide. Both changes took effect on 8 August 2026 for regulated and non-regulated countries. Montreal surcharge remains at US$390 Maersk has also introduced specific Heavy Weight Surcharges for cargo moving through Montreal. For imports from worldwide origins via Montreal to Canada, the HWI is US$390. For exports from Canada via Montreal to worldwide destinations, the HWE is also US$390. These Montreal-specific charges took effect on 7 August 2026 and apply to all container types. Maersk revises Far East Asia-Mexico heavy load surcharge In a separate update, Maersk will revise its Heavy Load Surcharge for cargo moving from Far East Asia to Mexico. From 26 August 2026, a US$250 surcharge will apply to all 20-foot dry equipment with a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) above 20 metric tons. A US$250 surcharge will also apply to 40-foot non-operating reefers with a VGM above 23 metric tons. The surcharge applies to all Maersk ocean products. These include contract products, SPOT and Maersk Go. Maersk defines VGM as the combined weight of the cargo, dunnage and bracing, plus the tare weight of the container.
